Designing (Smallest) Mobile First; 320px or 375px? Discuss.
On 10th September 2019 Apple launched its new range of iPhone’s and with them, iOS 13. For many the annual Apple launch event is something to be heralded, and especially this year for the owners of iPhone SE’s who learned that once again their devices would be compatible with the new and updated operating system.
With this annual announcement comes the annual barrage of questions from designers and developers alike, and the one question I want to focus on in this story is;
“I see Apple are still supporting the iPhone SE, does this mean we (still) need to design with a 320px width artboard?”
For some of you the news that the iPhone SE is still compatible might not change a lot; you’ve been designing at 320px for years and if the SE is still compatible then why change now? For others it might be insignificant news as you forgot about 320px a long time ago and haven’t looked back. Finally however this might be the straw that broke the camels back; you’ve always diligently made your designs optimised for the smallest compatible devices, but this is one year too many, you open up Sketch, create a new artboard and have a fresh start, 375px here we come!
I’d love to open this debate up to you…
